December Behind the Label: The Story of Port and Sandeman’s Legacy

This December, we delve into the rich heritage of Port—a fortified wine steeped in history, tradition, and an enduring connection to British Christmas celebrations. At Jarrold, we’re celebrating the timeless appeal of this sweet wine from Portugal’s Douro Valley and exploring why Sandeman, one of the world’s most revered Port houses, remains a hallmark of quality and tradition.

The History of Port: A Fortified Connection

Port’s journey to becoming a Christmas staple is a tale rooted in history. First introduced to Britain in 1678, its popularity soared due to trade restrictions with France during the Napoleonic Wars. Portuguese wines became a beloved alternative, and Port quickly found its place on British tables.

The Douro Valley, where the magic begins, is as rugged as it is beautiful. Its schist rock hillsides are dotted with terraced vineyards, where vines cling to rocky soils that yield intensely fruity grapes. This unforgiving landscape produces some of the world’s finest Ports, including the exceptional offerings from Sandeman.

The Sandeman Legacy: Branding and Quality

Founded in 1790, Sandeman set the benchmark for quality and innovation in Port production. George Sandeman was a visionary, branding his barrels long before the concept of trademarks existed. In 1928, the iconic figure of “The Don,” clad in a black Portuguese cape and Spanish caballero hat, became a symbol of the brand. Mysterious and memorable, it has helped Sandeman become one of the most recognisable Port brands worldwide.

Today, Sandeman’s 600 hectares of vineyards are predominantly classified as “A” grade, ensuring their Ports are of outstanding quality.

The Craft of Port

Port’s unique character comes from its traditional production methods. Grapes are still foot-trodden, and fermentation is halted midway with the addition of a neutral brandy spirit, preserving its natural sweetness and creating a robust 20% ABV. The wine is then aged in the coastal town of Vila Nova de Gaia, where cooler conditions allow it to develop its signature depth and flavour.

Celebrate the Season with Port

Port remains a cherished part of British Christmas traditions, offering warmth and indulgence during the festive season. Whether rounding off a holiday feast or enjoying a quiet moment by the fire, a glass of Sandeman LBV Port is the perfect companion.
